The Year of Hope and Social Reform
for People with Disabilities

This year as we immerse ourselves in the Year of Hope we continue to discern about the meaning of the word.  Is “Hope” a feeling or a nice idea that we want or is the word much more? When we reflect on the word “Hope” within our Christian principles it becomes a very real and spiritual energy that is referred often within the Bible.

This real energy can be seen within review of practice and development of change for more improved outcomes. One such review of practice that connects to holistic learning outcomes and the well-being for students with disabilities is the roll out of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). As Gabrielle Kelly (Director of the Wellbeing and Resilience Centre at SAHMRI) stated, “This is a once in a lifetime reform by the federal government for a national overhaul of services for people with disabilities. This reform is constantly changing to meet the needs of clientele and government strategies.”

The NDIS has been implemented to support people (referred to as participants) with a disability to have equity, to make meaningful decisions to empower themselves to have choice in the process of decision making within their own life.  This social reform invests in a sustainable future to improve the well-being of participants to be more productive, to achieve better outcomes in education, the community and employment for life-long learning. The NDIS provides participants with individualised support and the flexibility to manage their supports to help them achieve their individual goals.

Whilst the NDIS continues to evolve this reform embraces hope towards a better society in Australia. In reference to Hebrews 6:19 Hope is called the anchor of the soul, because it gives stability to Christian life. This stability is not a good feeling or a nice idea, rather it is that which embraces a better world connected to the Gospel values and promise of the future that God has made. For more information on the NDIS please access the following link https://ndis.gov.au/index.html

Student Safety

The safety of your daughter is our highest priority. Before and after school drop offs are a busy time on the roads with many students walking, riding and using public transport to get to school.

Recently we have been experiencing more congestion regarding cars blocking intersections or obstructing other road users when families have been dropping off or collecting their daughters on the Valiant Rd and Mercedes Drive intersection.

An update on the Multi-Purpose Centre

It is all steam ahead on the new Multi-purpose Centre at Kildare College.

With the bulk fill and levelling complete, the builders started digging the footings with extreme care and precision. This will continue into next week, when reinforcement will be added ready for concrete.

Its footprint on the Kildare College masterplan is impressive, and we’re looking forward to keeping you up to date as the project commences.

Parents and Friends

Our Parents and Friends Committee raise funds for student initiatives and improvements. Recently, some of the funds raised were used to refurbish and refresh the outdoor space outside the old Learning Centre.  The House Leaders, Chaplain and School Counsellor use this space to meet with students in a quieter calmer environment. We hope the students find it to be a peaceful and relaxing area.

The theme for the Year 9 retreat day was “RESPECT”. Out of the theme grew the concept of respect for self and for others. Breaking open the message of Jesus enabled the students to better understand the scriptural foundation of showing respect to others through the example of Jesus who taught us that God made us all worthy of respect, as God made us all equal.

Life in a Year 8 English classroom with future journalist Angela Tamargo Napolitano

Over the last six weeks we have participated in various narrative workshops to help us write and form ideas for our creative writing. Some of them included speed writing for ideas, writing a six-sentence story to ensure we understand narrative structure, and character brainstorming techniques.
