World War II in ‘The Pacific’

21.03.19

Year 10 History students have been studying World War II, covering the impact of the Holocaust and the other theatre of war The Pacific – in particular the intended invasion of Australia by Japan, the fall of Singapore, the Battle of Kokoda and Papua New Guinea.

As part of their studies students were required to write a narrative story from the perspective of a Prisoner of War (POW); either captured in Europe or the Pacific.

To provide inspiration the students visited the Repatriation General Hospital Museum where they viewed artefacts donated by past POWs. This purpose built facility was where many POWs were treated after their release from Japanese prison camps.

Our tour guides were generous in sharing their knowledge of past events involving Australian POWs with the students, and willingly answered questions. To see so many historical artefacts on display certainly helped the students to develop a greater understanding of what these brave men and women experienced.

We look forward to reading their narrative stories and the knowledge they have gained by this experience.
