After many hours of dedication, the 2017 Year 9 HASS cohort have released Kildare College's very first App. Titled 'Honoring Australian War Spirits', the App is an exploration of Australian's who served in World War One.
Working in pairs, students researched the stories and contributions of individual Australians. Each class had a different theme, including Australians at Gallipoli, Australians on the Western Front, Australian Nurses as well as the contribution of Indigenous soldiers.
Students had assistance from the RSL of South Australia in providing workshops to students in researching the Virtual War Memorial portal and the National Archives. Students also had tremendous support from descendants of the World War One participants.
Under the guidance of Mrs Selga, Ms Clark, Ms Sarvas and Mrs Rotellini the stories were drafted, referenced and finalised in order to be added to the App.
Once the stories were completed, select students from each class worked with Mr Carter to learn the coding skills necessary to create an App. The App is now available in Android format. To download, search for 'Kildare College' in the Google Play store and look for the Honouring Australian War Spirit title. An Apple version is now being created and will be released in due course.
This project, which was lead by Mrs Selga, is an example of how Kildare College integrates digital technology skills throughout the curriculum. It is also an example of extending the curriculum beyond the classroom and into the community.
The App will be entered into the 2018 ANZAC School Awards for best use of technology.
