History - Medieval Fair

21.11.19

Students in Year 8 have been studying the Middle Ages, in particular, what it was like to live under the Feudal System. To finish our studies, we participated in the Medieval Fair held on the oval with everyone looking great in their costumes.

While the weather was warm it did not stop the 65 students from St Monica’s Primary School from enjoying the activities we had arranged. Fortunately, the gym was a cool venue for the egg and spoon, and sack races. The ‘Ye Olde’ doughnut eating competition was a real hit; as was the photo booth, stocks, Maypole dancing and Kubb, a Celtic children’s game. Roland the Scribe was also very popular, spending most of his day teaching us the art of beautiful calligraphy writing.

For lunch we feasted on roast lamb and pork in bread rolls with salad, the meat had been cooking on spit roasts all day; seeing the meat cooked this way certainly made us feel like we were back in medieval times.

In spite of the warm weather the Medieval Fair at Kildare was fun for everyone!

Year 8 Student Highlights

'I enjoyed the parade when we got to see everyone’s costumes; some had gone to lots of effort to look like their persona.'

'The sword fighting was great to watch; we all cheered loudly for the under-dog who certainly had a size disadvantage; so It was good to see him win a fight.'

'The food was amazing. They cooked a whole pig on a spit just like in Medieval Times; it made us hungry watching it go around and around, it tasted really nice too!'
