In Term 3, Kildare College trialled a new program called The Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program, developed and facilitated by Mia Davies College Social Worker, Sophie Caldwell Teacher and Nicole Kelly University Social Work Placement Student.
Based on ‘Whats the Buzz’, it is a unique social thinking program that encourages selected Year 7, 8 and 9 students to participate in fun activities that explore the skills required for building and maintaining friendships, enhancing social skills development and highlighting personal strengths.
The program runs through direct teaching, role play, games and fun in the context of an encouraging group. Each week has a focus on a particular topic according to student need.
For instance, we have looked at Applying Positive Thinking, Showing Empathy, Stress Management, Friendship and Bullying, Meeting and Greeting, and Resilience to name a few. The program is due to conclude in early Term 4, and has been seen as an incredible success.
‘The program is something the students look forward to attending each week and are very enthusiastic about, which is lovely to see. We have seen a lot of students blossom since joining the group, and a lot of strong bonds have been formed, who would not normally interact together. We have already received positive feedback from teachers who can see an improvement in participants’ confidence, leadership skills, social skills, and overall well-being’.
