English Literary Exam Preparation

05.07.18

Year 12 English Literary Studies External Assessment and Exam Preparation Evening.

It is really important that you stay informed about your daughter’s learning and how you can support them in their senior years.

Our Year 12 English Literary students and I took part in a preparatory evening on Tuesday 26 June, 2018 from 7.00 – 9.00pm held by the South Australian English Teachers Association at Wilderness School, Medindie.

The four sessions were presented by past markers and experienced teachers covering:

  • Planning and writing the Comparative Text Study
  • Reasons behind reading or viewing your comparative texts multiple times
  • How to approach the Critical Reading in the exam
  • HANDy guide to efficiently deconstructing texts
  • Zooming in and zooming out of a text tips
  • The secret tip [that’s now not so secret]: Discuss the resolution of a text in the last 10 minutes of your exam time. Why? Because most students forget to discuss the resolution!

Okay your daughter has all this information so now what? Well, you should see your daughter doing the following practice at home leading up to the trial exam on the 15 August and final exam on the 7 November:

Once per week they will spend 15 minutes familiarising themselves with the different online exam features.

  • Critically analysing every song, advert, film, TV show, You Tube etc. that they hear, read, and view. Be prepared to listen.
  • Reviewing the four PowerPoint presentations they received to support them in their studies.
  • Memorising their HANDy guide – give them a ‘hand’ and test them on it.
  • Each week sharing with you the Top 5 things about a different text type e.g. autobiography:
  1. A story of a person’s life told by the person (first person and past tense)
  2. A prominent person and their life experience and achievements
  3. Reveals or informs details of their life for personal or historical reasons
  4. Arranged in chronological or thematic order
  5. Significant events of that person’s life.

I understand that your daughter is pushing for independence, and having your support with their homework could be viewed as childish. But, you are a very important part of your daughter’s success and by using the above practice activities as conversation starters will really help them with their skill building.
