As part of a project for UniSA and our teachers, we have been researching information about the cultural inclusivity of Kildare College. While we are very aware that Kildare College is a community made up of many diverse cultures - we wanted to discover if there was more that the Colege community could do to encourage greater cultural inclusivity.
Our initial research was done in pairs and we researched Adelaide ‘Then and Now’. We then explored the many changes that have occurred at Kildare College since it opened in 1966. We interviewed past students, teachers who have been at Kildare College for many years, students from all cultural backgrounds who currently attend Kildare College and even staff in the canteen.
Our action research covered five main aspects, these included; Food, Language, Festivals and Celebrations, Cultural Identity and Religion. We created questions for surveys, interviews and were also looked through archives - including old year books! From our research we have written a proposal that we will taking to Mrs Rouggos, this is where we put forward suggestions that could be actioned on that we feel could create greater cultural inclusivity in our College.
To celebrate the end of our research we invited a cultural choir (Multicultural Melodies) who listened to our research findings and ideas for change, and also performed for us. The highlight was the shared cultural lunch where we tasted food from many different cultures!
