Indigenous Heritage Project Seminar

Date: 09 May 2017 4:00pm - 09 May 2017
Venue: Kildare College, 96 Valiant Road, Holden Hill, South Australia, 5088

Prof. Alan Cooper and his team have recently completed a ground breaking study into Aboriginal people's migration into and around Australia. With the consent of the families, the researchers analysed mitochondrial DNA found in hair samples taken from Aboriginal people during expeditions run between 1928 and the 1970s.

The project leader, Prof Alan Cooper, said it was “amazing” that the team had found Aboriginal communities have remained in discrete geographical regions. “This is unlike people anywhere else in the world, and provides compelling support for the remarkable Aboriginal cultural connection to country”.

Kuarna Elder Lewis O’Brien provided his hair for the project, and was on the advisory board. He sees it as proving much of what Aboriginal people already knew culturally. “Aboriginal people have always known that we have been on our land since the start of our time, but it is important to have science show that to the rest of the world”.

Listen to Prof. Alan Cooper and his team present the findings of the study, and explain Aboriginal people's metaphysical connection to country.
