Year 8 Geography - Field Trip to Adelaide Metropolitan Coastline

28.03.18

During the visit to Kingston Park Beach students saw obvious signs of longshore drift which leaves the beach rocky with very little sand. They then travelled to West Beach where the beach was wider and sandier. The man-made dunes established nearby were evidence of the efforts local councils have made to replace dunes that have been removed to allow people to build houses, construct roads and create a nearby marina over the years. It was here that students walked along the beach to collect the finest shell specimen they could find!

To complete the field trip we made our way towards Outer Harbour where unlike Kingston Park Beach and West Beach, Outer Harbour is a very wide sandy beach. The large marina established there caters for people to enjoy many leisure activities; however, it also impacts on the natural process of longshore drift as it decreases the changes to the coastline.

Chips for lunch on the marina at North Haven was shared with a few seagulls, and rounded off an enjoyable excursion where students were able to learn outside the classroom. A lovely warm day, paddling in the water’s edge made the excursion very enjoyable.
