Student representatives from the College attended the Tea Tree Gully Youth Leadership Conference on Monday 22 October. Networking with other schools in the area, the students spent the day at the Golden Grove Arts Centre listening to guest speakers and taking part in leadership skill building exercises.
Speakers, including Brad Chilcott (Welcome Australia), Joshua Stokes (Youth Manager YMCA) and representatives from the City of Tea Tree Gully Council, spoke about what it means to be a leader and the opportunities that are available to young people to make a change. Our very own Aduer Yuel also shared her wisdom about what it takes to be a leader after winning the 2018 City of Tea Tree Gully Youth Achievement Award for Leadership. She spoke about her journey as a leader and suggested that listening, motivation and taking an active role in your community not only makes you an effective leader but the best version of yourself.
The students also took part in a Shape your City challenge in which they had to design ideas to engage the community and solve real life problems. The students shone during this challenge as they posed ideas around bee hotels, electric car charging stations and banning throwaway plastics in the area. Their ideas were so good that the team were the winners of this initiative on the day!
Special mentions must go to Danielle Mower who took part in an interactive live debate, Amber Chapman who found the golden dinosaur and Tiana Costanzo who wowed the crowd with her dancing skills.
Thank-you to the City of Tea Tree Gully for creating this opportunity and to those students who represented the College with such enthusiasm and positivity.
