Refugee Week

22.06.18

As part of Refugee Week, The Chai & Chat Team at Kildare College hosted an Eid Lunch at the College, to acknowledge this important religious holiday, marking the end of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar and is observed by Muslims around the world as a month of fasting, to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad, according to Islamic belief. There are many reasons Muslims fast during Ramadan, from cultivating positive relationships with family and community and as an act of solidarity for those who struggle with hunger and poverty around the globe.

The students invited family and friends to attend the lunch, where they cooked, cleaned and showed great leadership.

To end Refugee Week, The Chai & Chat Team flew traditional handmade kites. Kite flying is an important tradition in many cultures, however in Afghanistan extremist groups banned their use. Anyone who engaged in this activity was in grave danger. Our school community acknowledges the sacrifices refugees have made by celebrating their bravery through the beautiful art of kite flying.
