Making the Right Decision

21.06.18

This week we were fortunate to have Magistrate Ian White attend the College and speak to the students about the importance of making the right decision at the right time and the impact that decision making has on our future.

Did you know people tend to spend a total of 40 days a year on their phone? By being on our phone this often we sometimes get caught up in the online world. The Magistrate provided information to our Year 8 and Year 9 students about the consequences of transmitting inappropriate images, online bullying and harassment, consent and how possession of 2 grams of an illegal substance can result in a criminal conviction.

He concluded the presentation with an uplifting video about 1992 Olympian Derek Redmond who tore his hamstring in the final. He lay down deflated. Then he suddenly remembered where he was, made a decision to get up and finish the race. The takeaway message from this, is that we often find ourselves in different situations and places that require us to think about what decision to make and the impact of this on ourselves and others. The students were reminded that the support of those who love us, even in challenging times are what can help us get over the line.

Next week the Year 9s head to Latitude as a concluding activity for our Girls Achieve Program unit. We have been focusing on aspects of positive relationships and strategies to build effective and lasting relationships. Year 8 students will participate in a shared year level lunch during their GAP lesson on Tuesday. They are nearly half way through their first year of secondary school which is hard to believe. It is most rewarding for our teaching staff to see the students become more confident over the course of the year. Many students have commented that they feel like they really belong here at Kildare.
