National Science Week at Kildare College

Science week, held in August each year aims to encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in. Science is a way of helping the brain grow in finding new knowledge and helps us satisfy our curiosity of how the world develops and works today.

Science is valued by society because the application of scientific knowledge helps to satisfy many basic human needs and improve living standards. Finding a cure for cancer and a clean form of energy are just two topical examples. Science affects us all, every day of the year, from the moment we wake up, all day long, and through the night.

During Science Week at Kildare, students took part in a photo and drawing competition, science kahoots during pastoral care, made alginate worms in Chemistry and rockets fly on the oval.  They used their senses during a nutrition activity at lunchtime, led by past scholar Dr Bianca Kyriacou and heard our current student teacher and another past scholar, Lucy Catt, talk about her job as a zookeeper at the Adelaide Zoo. Lucy was also able to share another part of her job; caring for an orphaned warru.

Abby Coleman also participated in a special science week activity, sampling the macroinvertebrates in the local River Torrens to test for water pollution. The good news is that the water is perfect!
